Expectations

While I was dropping the kids off at school today two of the three morning hosts were ranting against all the extra gym goers in January.  They felt that they should be there in August and September, which I understand to a point but hey everyone has to start somewhere right?  And there can be safety in numbers, hitting the gym for the first time in January seems safer because you feel that there may be people like you and seem less intimidating.  And quite frankly if you start in January who is to say you won't be there in August and September, sure the numbers indicate that most will not be but some will be.

The third host seemed ok with it and he held the attitude that I have, January is somewhat arbitrary however it also feels like a clean slate for some (myself included) so I completely understand how someone would want to start a new routine in January.

Finally one of the two hosts that doesn't like the January invasion as I will call it, did make a great point.  She felt that January puts too much expectation on a person to be instantly better.  That resonated with me because I was feeling a bit down on myself because I didn't get a chance to exercise yesterday and I am going to fit it in today at some point but I don't know when exactly yet.  So I have been thinking about what she said and realized I should not expect myself to be perfect right now and I should not expect myself to have the new routine down just yet, but use January as my set up month to build and solidify a system that works for me so I am still doing it in February and yes even through August and September. :)

So for all of you that decided that you will embark on a new something this year be it exercising more, eating better, doing more of what you love, whatever you pick just remember don't be too hard on yourself if you stumble in January.  Think of this month of learning to crawl and walk, and by February you will continue with a fast walk and then maybe even jogging and then running.

My padawan lesson is: "Progress will take work, so push yourself to advance but don't berate yourself for your stumbles."
