Reaction to Happier Podcast 207 (part 2 expansion of Try This At Home)
I can really relate to Liz's issue and I would have to say I would supplement her advice of "Go to the doctor" with "Tell the doctor the truth the whole truth".
For me I told my doctor about the the pain in my shoulder, I kept thinking it would get better and then I just became used to it and well it was my new normal that I was in pain. Crazy right? Since I ignored and down played the pain my body got tired of it and went to its own version of Obliger Rebellion and said PAY ATTENTION TO ME. Do you know what happens when when you get that bad? For me it was an ambulance trip to the ER (now called 'the incident').
Don't worry I am fine but I could have avoided a lot of headache if I had not downplayed how much pain I was in, and I did it for a long time by the time I had hit the ER it was roughly 15 months of hoping it would get better. It has been about 3 months since 'the incident' and I just graduated from physical therapy. If only I had been more honest with myself and my doctor I could have saved myself so much pain, anxiety, time, and not to mention expense.
All of that being said, I am going to disagree with Liz that Gretchen was sitting "too straight" in the CBS This Morning segment. The ultimate reason for 'the incident' poor posture! So I applaud the posture and I look to emulate it. I went to The Four Tendencies book tour in Cambridge, MA and she had a very similar posture and I anticipate that I will see that same posture when I go the Outer Order Inner Calm book tour. Her excellent posture just seems so natural and I aspire to have good posture and have it be second nature to me so I don't have to think about it, to make it as effortless as she makes it look.
The take away people is sit up straight, work on your posture! If you ever took dance lessons I bet your teacher harped on shoulders back and down I know mine did. Well she knew a thing or two, the first thing my physical therapist told me shoulders back and down. Also news flash the pain was in my shoulder but the real problem was my neck, the shoulder pain was just referred pain. So the hanging my head down to work on my computer and to read started it all, and as compensation there was more strain on the neck and then shoulders and it spiraled out of control. So in addition to working on your posture maybe you should raise your monitor too.
