So what do you do?

This is both an easy and tough question for me to answer.  It is easy because I know what I do, I create websites for micro and small businesses.  It is tough for me because I feel that it has the potential to pigeon hole me into that position.

Being my own boss has some great perks but it also has some disadvantages too.  There are a lot of options out there to help people find a job and sifting through all that information and trying to create a compelling reason for some one to hire you is a lot of work.

I think it is fairly obvious that each business that hires someone wants that person to be competent, skilled, and able to achieve.  I also think there is a lot of focus on striving to be on the top of the pile, to 'Lean In" to borrow a phrase, and that is where I think society is a bit short sighted.

I am all for women and men reaching for that brass ring and be in the C-Suite if that is what they truly desire.  Those people work long hours and quite frankly I like to work hard but I like a different balance to my life than I envision those powerful people have.   Heck, you don't even have to be in the C-Suite to have long hours and enjoy them, if that is your thing more power to you.  In fact I am just the person you want on your team.

Why you ask?

I think it is quite simple, I like to work but I am not obsessed with work.  I enjoy the challenges of a job, I get a lot of satisfaction with a job well done, but I prefer to be a supporting cast member.  I like seeing people succeed and I like helping, but I don't necessarily want the spotlight, I will step in from time to time as needed but I don't want to live there.  Having a person like me on your team provides you with quality support to help the team and drive the team, but it isn't likely that I am going to be battling you for your position.

What is it that I want to do?

There are so many things that I could see myself doing to be honest that the job titles can vary.

  • Product Manger or Owner
  • Customer Experience Manager
  • Project Coordinator
  • Life Coach (Ok this is a bit silly I am not certified but see below)
  • Researcher
  • Assistant

So what is this about a life coach?

Well a few weeks ago a friend of mine was over and she is a bit younger than me and we were talking about life and moving and being and adult.  She was telling me about some of the issues she had moving into her new place and life in general.  So I gave her ideas and suggestions about a number of topics, and she said that I solved all her problems.  Well I am not quite sure that I did, but it felt good.

I had mentioned that experience in my book group and also shared a life hack that I am trying out to bring me more 'happiness'.  The members of the group agreed that I would be a great life coach the problem with that is  (1) I have no certification and really don't desire to get one (2) secondly I already have a business and do not want to start another one.  I would be more than happy to be an employee and provide this level of service, set up meetings and chat about their problems and find some solutions and life hack for them.  So if you know anyone that is looking for that type of service/employee give me a shout!
