It Is Impossible To Follow The Science, When It Doesn't Exist

There is a vexxing thing about science, and that is it takes time.  It takes time to prove or disprove theories, which is hard to swallow when there are big things going down like the COVID-19 situation.  But knowing it takes time, makes it more palatable to follow a theory when we know nothing.

Here were are some 20+ months later and we should have some data on some things but yet we have very little.  I have to wonder why is that?  I especially wonder when the mantra of "follow the science" has been tweeted, shared, shouted, and printed all over this earth and cyberspace too.

I am going to limit myself mostly to the ever present mask situation.  Early in the pandemic we had the flip flops of no mask, then mask, and the contradictory opinions of the WHO and CDC, but with the "follow the science" mentality I could work with it because as I said above it takes time, and quite frankly perhaps we had learned more, this didn't seem so wild and crazy.

But then I asked myself what data is there?  And do masks really provide that much benefit to warrant the annoyance of wearing them?

Only 10% effective?

How much 'virus' is in the air?

So if this virus like other viruses travel on very small aerosols how much is in the air?  I wonder about this when I find studies like this one from Singapore... basically they took people that tested positive for COVID-19,  30 minutes of breathing and 15 minutes each of talking and singing.  Now that is a real world study and I would personally would weight those results over a simulated aerosol test done with a dummy and not an actual person and no actual virus present.

So what did that study find?  Well the virus was on those small aerosols that masks really cannot block and when those aerosols were captured they could not be cultured.  What does that mean?  If they cannot be cultured does that mean that they are not as transmissible?  Does that mean that there is a low level of the virus exhaled?

Shouldn't this type of information be teased out further to give us more solid information?  I would think yes this should be expanded to learn more.
